The Russian Federal Highway connects city of Yakutsk with the south. Although it is a federal highway, it is just a dirt road. When frozen in the winter, this makes for an excellent surface, and the posted speed limit is 70 kph (43 mph). However, in the summer, with any significant rain, the road turns to impassible mud that often swallows whole smaller vehicles.

Following photos were taken just prior to a major traffic jam of more than 600 vehicles. According to the witnesses, motorists ran out of fuel and food resulting in some serious altercations. The opening match and final in the second edition of the Indian Premier League in South Africa will be held at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town and the Wanderers in Johannesburg respectively on April 18 and May 24.

The semi-finals are to be held on May 22 and 23 in Pretoria and Johannesburg respectively, as per the full schedule of the Twenty20 League available with PTI.

In a double header on the first day, last year's winners Rajasthan Royals will take on Royal Challengers, Bangalore, while Mumbai Indians will clash with the first edition's runners-up, Chennai Super Kings, at Cape Town.

In all, the 59 matches will be held in eight cities: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, East London, Kimberly, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

Kingsmead in Durban, which has a large number of South Asians, has been alloted the lion's share of 16 matches while the Centurion Park in Pretoria will host 12.

The Wanderers in Johannesburg and Newlands in Cape Town come next best with eight matches each, with the latter playing host to four of these on the first two days of the cash-rich, high-profile competition.

Seven matches are to be held in St George's Park in Port Elizabeth while Buffalo Park in East London has been allotted four matches.

Two matches each have been handed to Outsurance Oval in Bloemfontein and De Beers Oval in Kimberley.

The matches will be played at 1600 IST (12.30 pm local time) and 2000 IST (4.30 pm local time).

There are ten double headers (two matches back-to-back at the same venue), with Durban hosting half of these.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled its latest experimental car - 200EX - at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday.
200EX is a design study for a contemporary four-door saloon and shows the direction for RR4, a new model series from Rolls-Royce due for production in 2010.
The exterior design is dominated by large, uninterrupted surfaces, while finely sculptured horizontal lines add definition and geometric precision. At the front, a pair of LED headlamps flank the latest evolution of the world's most famous grille.
The exterior of 200EX is finished in Darkest Tungsten, which contrasts with the silver satin finish applied to the bonnet and A-pillar. Seven-spoke, 20-inch wheels complete the visual impact of the exterior.

The dashboard has been kept deliberately clear; it is spacious in its design and has an intuitive layout.
The controls are neatly sculptured, with more important functions emphasised by accents of chrome.
The soft light of the instrument panel glows through the familiar black-rimmed steering wheel, which itself incorporates a number of violin keys as well as an ergonomic roller-ball control.
The interior of 200EX is finished in supple, natural grain Creme Light leather, with Cornsilk carpets and cashmere blend headliner. The featured wood veneer is Santos Palissander, chosen for its contemporary look and striking grain.

A man in China has undergone a second operation to remove a massive, 10kg collection of tumours that have virtually hidden his face and are warping his backbone.

Huang Chuncai underwent his second operation to remove the tumours, which currently weigh around 10kg (22lbs), at a hospital in Guangzhou, in southern China's Guangdong province, on January 3.Huang, a 32-year-old native from a remote village in China's southern province of Hunan, said he is relieved after parts of his facial tumours, which originally weighed about 23kg, were removed in July last year.

India's Moon Mission Unveiled-Chandrayan Will Not Land on Moon

Chandrayan, India's historic moon mission, will be launched between October 22 and October 26. Director of the Indian Space Research Organisation's Satellite Centre Dr T K Alex and Project Director of the Chandrayan-I mission Dr Anna Durai informed media persons at Bengaluru on Thursday that the exact date for the launch has not been fixed, but the window period is between October 22 and 26.

Dr Alex added that the main objective of this mission was to understand the origin of the moon. Apart from conducting tests on the surface of the moon, the mission also intends to conduct tests on the poles of the moon. Scientists are planning to land a rover on the moon to carry out chemical analysis of the lunar surface.

Chandrayan, which is being launched at a total cost of Rs 386 crore, is also scheduled to carry 11 payloads, which would include those from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Sweden, Japan, Germany and Bulgaria. Dr Alex further pointed out that the technology used for the Chandrayan mission is ten times better than other countries. Moreover, ISRO excels in remote sensing and imaging and hence the moon can be photographed from a close range of five metres from the ground.

The mission aims to cover the entire moon and gather as much information as possible. Currently, Chandrayan is going through crucial tests in Bengaluru. It still has to undergo the vibration and acoustic tests. The spacecraft will be subject to heavy vibration first and then the sound of four jet planes will be put together to check its endurance.

However, Chandrayan will not land on the moon due to technical difficulties. The spacecraft would hover around the moon, said the ISRO team working on the moon mission. Chandrayan could provide important leads on the possibility of human habitation on the moon, said Dr Anna Durai. ISRO recently established a 32-meter diameter antenna at Byalalu near Bengaluru to provide tracking and command support for Chandrayaan-I. The antenna and associated systems are the first steps in building the Indian Deep Space Network, which is vital for facilitating a two-way radio communication link between the spacecraft and the earth.

Theory : It is one of the biggest and most controversial experiments to be carried out in recent times. On September 10, a machine costing a staggering $7.75 billion (Rs 31,000 crore) will be fired up to recapture conditions not seen since the birth of the universe almost 14 billion years ago.The machine, located at CERN, a Geneva-based nuclear research lab, will carry on the experiment inside a 27-km tunnel deep beneath the French-Swiss border.
The news of the experiment has evoked resentment from some experts, who feel that such an experiment could cause the end of the universe.

The Large Hadron Collider will fire particles around the tunnel. It will then smash protons -- one of the building blocks of matter -- into each other at energies up to seven times greater than ever achieved.LHC is the world's most powerful particle accelerator, producing beams seven times more energetic than any previous machine, and around 30 times more intense when it reaches design performance, probably by 2010.

It relies on technologies that would not have been possible 30 years ago. The LHC is, in a sense, its own prototype.Starting up such a machine is not as simple as flipping a switch. Commissioning is a long process that starts with the cooling down of each of the machine's eight sectors.
This is followed by the electrical testing of the 1600 superconducting magnets and their individual powering to nominal operating current.

These steps are followed by the powering together of all the circuits of each sector, and then of the eight independent sectors in unison in order to operate as a single machine.Once stable circulating beams have been established, they will be brought into collision, and the final step will be to commission the LHC's acceleration system to boost the energy to 5 TeV (Tera Electron volts, a unit of measuring particle accelerators), taking particle physics research to a new frontier. Teams of physicists from around the world will analyse the particles created in the collisions using special detectors in a number of experiments dedicated to the LHC.Experts hope to find answers to some of the biggest questions in physics such as why the universe looks the way it does and how to explain mass, gravity and mysterious 'dark matter'.

One of the leading figures behind the experiment is Dr Lynn Evans, the son of a miner, who said his fascination with science started as a boy, when he would create small explosions with his chemistry set at his council house in Aberdare.According to media reports, there are many theories as to what will result from these collisions, but what is for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the working of the Universe.

The LHC reproduces in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, collisions at centre-of-mass energies, less than those reached in the atmosphere by some of the cosmic rays that have been bombarding the earth for billions of years, says the Journal of Physics, allaying fears of the world being sucked into a virtual black hole created by the giant machine.

The people behind the experiment have also been flooded by telephone calls from worried people. According to the CERN, there is no basis for any concern about the safety of the LHC.

Across a courtyard that used to be the prison exercise yard is a museum dedicated to the building's history (forger Frank Abagnale, Jr. was a former inmate), and a modern 16-story tower with 280 rooms topped by a sprawling President's Suite. Sit on its terrace deck with views of the Charles River, Cambridge and Boston below, and you may very well turn away the rescue helicopter.

Malmaison, Oxford
The Malmaison chain's 98-room Oxford property perfectly meshes old prison character—heavy cell doors; barred windows, bare brick walls—with funky design touches such as vintage Victorian bathtubs, plush velvet-toned bedrooms, and a private cinema for guests in the Governor's House suites. The main rooms are in the A Wing and C Wing sections, as is brasserie Mal, featuring organic Oxfordshire-grown farm ingredients, and a sultry blue-neon lit cocktail lounge helmed by a sommelier by the name of Johnny Walker. The hotel's motto is: "This time, we take no prisoners."

Four Seasons Istanbul
Billed by its management as the most beautiful prison in the world, the handsome turrets and mustard yellow walls of this castle-like neoclassical building are just as they were when this was the notorious Sultanahmet Jail up until 1982. But things sure have changed. Instead of cramped cells, guests get to stay in one of 65 sprawling rooms or suites decorated with contemporary furnishings and Turkish artwork, all nestled around a lush palm-lined garden courtyard. Restaurant Seasons, rated the finest hotel dining in Turkey, has a terrace spilling out into the gardens—a relaxing oasis after visits to the nearby Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar.

Breakwater Lodge, Cape Town
Robben Island may be South Africa's most notorious former prison, but the historic Breakwater Lodge, an 1859-built structure with castle-like ramparts on the glitzy Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the heart of Cape Town, is the country's first jail-turned-hotel. Built to house male convicts working on a nearby breakwater, it became a hotel in 1991, and largely caters to business travelers in 300 standard rooms and suites. What really sets it apart are the views: Table Mountain out back; water to the front. Get a harbor view on a high floor and you can actually see Robben Island from your window.

Comfort Inn Alamo Riverwalk, San Antonio
About a 10-minute walk from the actual Riverwalk, this 82-room hotel adjacent to the Spanish Governor's Palace once served as the San Antonio Bexar County Jail. Built in 1878, about 40 years after the battle of the Alamo, it housed convicts and condemned men awaiting death row right up until 1962, when it became a holding depot for city and county records. In 2004 it re-opened as a modern, if somewhat understated Comfort Inn. Many of the original details are intact, from the handsome Spanish colonial façade out front, to steel bars on the windows of large square rooms—former cells. Thankfully, a three story chute in the "hanging room" has been sealed off.

Hotel Katajanokka, Helsinki
Hen nights and bachelor parties love to book this former prison in central Helsinki for "ball and chain" packages. "Guilty" stickers are available at reception and there's even a "segregation" cell for the bride-to-be. Built in 1837, this was the Helsinki county prison right up until 2002. Today there are stylishly minimalist rooms along with prison uniform-striped carpets, and the high red-brick prison walls enclose a shady, flowering garden that used to be a depressing exercise yard. Don't miss a candle-lit dinner in the restaurant Jailbird where you can order the President Ryti tenderloin, named for the famous former inmate.

Jail Hotel Loewengraben, Lucerne
There's no escaping the penal theme at this Swiss jail-turned-hip-budget-hotel in historic old town Lucerne. Thick wooden cell doors still have tiny slots for food to be pushed through, rooms have bars on the windows, and prison memorabilia decorates the walls in common areas. While it's sparklingly clean and light-filled, hearing the metal gates in the long corridors creak at night adds a certain prison-chic charm. Fortunately, the Alcatraz bar downstairs has a lively scene that goes on late into the night

Jail House Inn, Preston, Minn.
"Bed & Breakfast Worth Going to Jail for" reads the motto of this 12-room Italianate-style guesthouse in Preston, Minnesota that used to be the Old Fillmore County Jail. Erected in 1869, it served as the town's jail house until 1970, and briefly as a private residence, before its current owners restored it to period Victorian detail. Playing on the jail-house theme, you can sleep behind bars in a Cell Block room, in the Master Bedroom where the former Sheriff used to stay, or in the Court Room where hearings were held. This time though you get private whirlpools, fireplaces and a porch instead of a five-year sentence

Unitas Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic
This 19th-century convent became a secret interrogation center in Soviet times, with the noted dissident and future president Vaclav Havel a frequent "guest." After operating for many years as a budget pension, it's about to re-open as a stylish boutique hotel. The location is the thing: You're just feet away from the Gothic churches, galleries and cafes of the Old Town square and a short walk from the Charles Bridge.

Karosta Prison, Latvia
Bachelor parties from Western Europe throng to this bizarre Czarist prison fortress in Liepaja, a three hours' drive from the Latvian capital Riga, for what's billed as a KGB prison experience. A sprawling 19th-century naval prison that became a Soviet jail house in Communist times, overnight guests—and you do only want to spend one night—sleep on real prisoners' benches and mattresses, in real cells, get showered with cold water, and bellowed at by Russian guards. It treads a fine line between tribute and insult, but console yourself that it was immeasurably worse for those who came before you.
